French press coffee is loved for its rich body and bold flavor—but it’s also easy to get wrong. This guide shows you how to brew a clean, balanced French press without bitterness or sludge.

French Press Starter Recipe

Ratio: 1:15
Grind: Coarse
Water temp: ~200°F / 93°C
Steep time: 4 minutes

Recommended roast: Medium to medium-dark for sweetness, body, and smooth extraction.

Step-by-Step

  1. Add coffee to the press.
  2. Bloom with hot water for 30 seconds.
  3. Add remaining water, place lid (don’t plunge yet).
  4. Steep 4 minutes.
  5. Plunge slowly and serve immediately.
