How to Taste Coffee (Without Being a Snob)

You don’t need a trained palate or fancy vocabulary to enjoy coffee. Tasting coffee well is really about noticing a few simple things and trusting your experience.

Not sure which roast fits your brew method? Read our guide on how to choose the right roast for your setup.

The Goal

Good coffee should taste pleasant, balanced, and satisfying. If you enjoy it, you’re doing it right.

Complent approach: Enjoyment first, details second.

Start With These Three Things

  • Sweetness (natural sweetness even without sugar)
  • Balance (nothing dominates)
  • Finish (clean vs lingering bitterness)

A Simple Tasting Method

  1. Smell before tasting.
  2. Take a small sip and let it coat your mouth.
  3. Notice first taste, then aftertaste.

If you’re experimenting with methods, tasting becomes much easier when the recipe is consistent. Use these method guides: Drip, French Press, AeroPress, Cold Brew.
